A Flat Earth: The Islamic Perspective

In 1993, the Muslim world was stunned by the alleged edict by then supreme religious authority of the Islamic University of Medina, in Saudi Arabia. On page 23 of his infamous book, “Evidence that the Earth is Standing Still”, Shaykh ‘Abdul-’Azeez ibn ‘Abdullaah ibn Baaz declared, “The earth is flat, and anyone who disputes this claim is an atheist who deserves to be punished.” Thereafter, Sheikh ‘Abdul-’Aziz ibn ‘Abdullah ibn Baaz had received pressure from his contemporaries and eventually was persuaded by his close collegues to edit his book. The first edition of “Evidence that the Earth is Standing Still” has been discarded and the subsequent editions revised.

The following text from the Qur’aan and Ahaadeeth below is evidence that Islaam advocates a view of the Earth as being flat.

Translation of the Qur’aanic ayaah 002:022:
“Who has made the earth your couch, and the heavens your canopy; and sent down rain from the heavens; and brought forth therewith Fruits for your sustenance; then set not up rivals unto Allah when ye know (the truth).” [Translation courtesy of Abdullah Yusuf Ali]

Translation of the Qur’aanic verse 013:003:
“And it is He Who spread out the earth, and placed therein firm mountains and rivers and of every kind of fruits He made Zawjain Ithnain (two in pairs – may mean two kinds or it may mean: of two sorts, e.g. black and white, sweet and sour, small and big, etc.) He brings the night as a cover over the day. Verily, in these things, there are Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.) for people who reflect.” [Translation courtesy of Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al Hilali]

Translation of the Qur’aanic verse 015:019:

Translation of the Qur’aanic verses 018:083-091:
“And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnain. Say: “I shall recite to you something of his story.” Verily, We established him in the earth, and We gave him the means of everything. So he followed a way. Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy (or hot) water. And he found near it a people. We (Allah) said (by inspiration): “O Dhul-Qarnain! Either you punish them, or treat them with kindness.” He said: “As for him (a disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah) who does wrong, we shall punish him; and then he will be brought back unto his Lord; Who will punish him with a terrible torment (Hell). “But as for him who believes (in Allah’s Oneness) and works righteousness, he shall have the best reward, (Paradise), and we (Dhul-Qarnain) shall speak unto him mild words (as instructions).” Then he followed another way, Until, when he came to the rising place of the sun, he found it rising on a people for whom We (Allah) had provided no shelter against the sun. So (it was)! And We knew all about him (Dhul-Qarnain).” [Translation courtesy of Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al Hilali]

Translation of the Qur’aanic verse 020:053:
“Who has made earth for you like a bed (spread out); and has opened roads (ways and paths etc.) for you therein; and has sent down water (rain) from the sky. And We have brought forth with it various kinds of vegetation.” [Translation courtesy of Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al Hilali]

Translation of the Qur’aanic verse 027:061:
“Is not He (better than your gods) Who has made the earth as a fixed abode, and has placed rivers in its midst, and has placed firm mountains therein, and has set a barrier between the two seas (of salt and sweet water). Is there any ilah (god) with Allah? Nay, but most of them know not.” [Translation courtesy of Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al Hilali]

Translation of the Qur’aanic verse 043:010:

“And after that He spread the earth;” [Translation courtesy of Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al Hilali]

“When the heaven is split asunder, And listens and obeys its Lord, and it must do so; And when the earth is stretched forth, And has cast out all that was in it and became empty, And listens and obeys its Lord, and it must do so;” [Translation courtesy of Muhammad Muhsin Khan and Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din al Hilali]

Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 456:
Narrated Abdullah:

Regarding the Verse: “Indeed he (Muhammad) did see. Of the Signs of his Lord, The Greatest!” (53.18) That the Prophet had seen a green carpet spread all over the horizon of the sky.
